Kristin Gundersen, DVM, CVA, CCRP, CVPP grew up in rural New Hampshire and knew she wanted to be a veterinarian as soon as she was old enough to figure out what a vet does. She attended Washington State University for undergraduate courses and veterinary school. She graduated with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2004.
Following graduation from veterinary school, Dr. G moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and worked in a practice focusing on small animal and exotic medicine and surgery. After two winters in the Frozen Northlands, she and her husband decided to relocate to Upstate New York (balmy, by comparison).
Once in the Albany area, Dr. G’s long-standing interest in complementary medicine was rekindled through her work with Dr. Nina Caires at Parkside Veterinary Hospital. In 2007, she attended the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in Reddick, Florida and completed extensive training to become a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist. In 2008, she made the decision to focus her practice more exclusively on alternative medicine. In 2009-2010 she attended Options for Animals College of Animal Chiropractic in Wellsville, Kansas to become Certified in Animal Chiropractic by the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association. In 2010, she also attended the University of Tennessee Certificate Program in Canine Physical Rehabilitation and became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner. In 2011, she received her certification as a Veterinary Pain Practitioner through the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management. She has also completed several additional in-depth courses for Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal, Western herbal, and nutritional therapies.
Dr. G is married to Dr. Ryan Penno, an equine veterinarian. They share their home with two dogs, three horses, one cat, many honeybees, and a beautiful daughter named Madeleine. Dr. G keeps busy when not at work or being a mom by riding her horses, gardening, cooking, making glass art, and beekeeping. She also loves to travel.
